The skin tones were airbrushed with gray (left), giving a softer overall look. Details were added using shades of gray mixed with ivory black, unbleached titanium and titanium white (above right).

The goal is to make this look like a hand-painted photograph so everything is painted in shades of gray, then transparent colors will be laid on top. The color tones will be a transparent mixture of raw sienna and burnt umber.

The Zappa Gibson is a privately commissioned piece. What's shown here is the actual painted body with the hardware and neck added in Photoshop. It was painted using Liquitex acrylics for the portrait and AutoAir enamels for the psychedelica because of its vibrant colors.
